My name is Scott Von Holzen and I am a Music & Music Box artist. My connection to music began when I was seven years old with accordion lessons. In the late sixties I joined a garage band singing backup while playing the electric organ. Over the years I have studied and learned to play a little guitar, piano, violin, and alto saxophone to better understand music and music theory.
Painting music first started with the goal of taking written sheet music and turning it into an art form. My artistic style has since evolved from single canvases, to multiple, to attaching the music to the artwork, to now three-dimensional music boxes and letting the music flow outside the borders of the canvas.
I can best describe these artworks as a portrait of song in that they are a visual presentation of the movement of the music being portrayed. It is only in the last few years that I added a playable music box to my artworks creating not only a visual but a performance show.
The works of today are Interactive with a push of a button that plays a cover of the music being portrayed. The visual part of the artwork has also evolved to be a sampling of the cover music. This combination builds on the original music theme of using color, design, shapes, words, and other materials to tell a story, the history, or to connect the artwork to the music. A finished music box then portrays to the viewer, through sight and sound, an experience in the visual and performance arts.
