Andrea LaMorte Schaffer

Media: Mixed Media, Pastels, Clay

Send me an email.

I have always enjoyed making and designing things, from little handmade books to quilts to illustrations and sculpture. I took my first formal art class in college and went on to get an MFA from the Milton Avery School of Art at Bard College in Annandale on Hudson, NY. My work back then was large, found-object sculptures.
After my children were born I taught art and then writing composition at the elementary level. I love to make art with kids and watch how freely they paint and shape things.Since retiring I have worked with pastels and, more recently, with clay. I sketch abstractly and look at what appears in the sketch. Sometimes the sketch is interesting enough to carry it into clay shapes with texture and depth.
Mixed media seems to be what I gravitate toward, perhaps because it offers some surprises. It is as if the different objects and different media show up and offer to join my piece of art. I enjoy that kind of conversation with the artwork.
